Reading and writing
Our literacy program is grounded in the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project, using writing workshops, rich classroom libraries, leveled reading groups, and one-on-one conferences. We meet each child where they are and grow both their skills and their love of reading and writing.
How you’ll know your child is learning
We use standards-based grading, so families can see exactly which skills a child has mastered and where they’re still growing on a range of a 1 to 4 score. In addition, students create portfolios of their work throughout the year; we hold student- and teacher-led conferences, and end-of-project presentations to give you a clear, ongoing picture of your child’s progress.
Testing
Students at TESG take significantly less standardized testing than at many traditional schools. We limit testing to what North Carolina requires — early-grade literacy checks, and the state’s reading, math, and science assessments at the required grade levels.
Support for every learner
Every child needs something a little different to thrive. TESG provides the full continuum of services for students with IEPs or 504 plans, English-language support for multilingual learners, and enrichment and extension for students ready for more challenge — all within a classroom designed to be responsive to each learner.
Families often ask: “No nightly homework — will my child still be challenged?”
Absolutely. We prioritize strong, engaging instruction during the school day, which keeps students challenged and reduces burnout at home. Evenings are freed up for rest, reading, and family time — while learning momentum keeps building.
